Mae Sai is the northernmost district of Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand and is a major border crossing between Thailand and Myanmar. The monument shown above is located just east of the Burma - Thailand Bridge. The border area is chock full of small street shops to allow the Burmese to take advantage of the lower cost of goods in Thailand.
Mae Sai is home to many different peoples of the various tribes that once prospered in this area. I was lucky enough to be visit while the town was having a festival celebrating the 10 tribes.
Overlooking the border Town of Mae Sai is Wat Phra That Doi Wao, just a short walk up (but a little strenuous) from the Mae Sai market area. The views from the chedi are absolutely amazing and give you a great over view of the entire border area and a large portion of the Town of Mae Sai. It is a big recommend if you find yourself in the Town of Mae Sai.
